SOUTH BEND — South Bend police officer Jamil Elwaer was treated at Memorial Hospital for injuries he suffered in a five-vehicle accident Thursday morning at the intersection of Indiana 933 and Cleveland Road, authorities said.

He was released from Memorial Hospital by early afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Elwaer, a patrolman who has been on the force about two years, was westbound on Cleveland responding to a call about an injury accident at Elwood and Woodbine on the city’s west side, according to St. Joseph County Police.

The lights and siren on Elwaer’s squad car were activated and he stopped at the intersection before proceeding, said William Redman, assistant chief of the St. Joseph County Police Department.

As the squad car entered the intersection, it was struck by a southbound Chevy Equinox, a mid-size SUV, driven by Peggie Ncube, 56, of Niles, Redman said.

The impact caused the squad car to crash into a third vehicle, police said. The Equinox veered off and struck a fourth vehicle and a fifth vehicle also received minor damage.

Ncube complained of pain, but didn’t require hospital treatment, according to police. Other than the officer, no one else involved in the accident required medical treatment.

No citations were issued, Redman said.

The accident the officer was headed to occurred about 8 a.m. at Elwood and Woodbine. There was an initial call that a victim of that accident was unconscious and suffering life-threatening injuries, city police said, but turned out to be less serious.
