KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) -

A jury has acquitted a young man of all charges in a fire that killed three children last winter in Kalamazoo.

Fred Glespie was cleared Friday of involuntary manslaughter and child abuse in the deaths of 3-year-old twins and a 1-year-old. Police say the kids were left alone in an apartment last February.

Their mother, Jonetta Woods, was Glespie's girlfriend at the time. Woods told jurors that she had asked Glespie to watch the children while she visited a friend nearby, but there was conflicting testimony.

The 19-year-old Glespie says the acquittal brings much relief. Trial witnesses said he and Woods tried to save the children but were overwhelmed by the flames.

Glespie, who lives in Benton Harbor, says it's a tragedy he won't forget.
