Tuesday is Election Day, but this is an off-year when not many ballots will be cast for political offices in our area.

However, a number of special elections will be held, and topping those elections will be some costly school building plans.

In Goshen, a special election will help determine if the school system can go ahead with plans for a $17 million expansion and renovation project.

It would center around work at the high school and middle school and includes plans for a new swimming pool and adding space for music programs at both schools as well as adding more classroom space.

Tuesday's referendum in Goshen will only include city precincts 1 through 21, which are in the school district boundaries.

In Mishawaka, there is a $28 million bond issue for School City on the ballot.

Former school board member and accountant Mike Wojtysiak says the extra hundred dollars a year on a $100,000 home will hurt economic development in the older parts of town that lie inside the school district.

However, Superintendent Terry Barker says tight budgets have forced delays in needed repairs and improvements, and it's time to catch up.

Polls in Indiana Tuesday will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. In Michigan polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
