Do you use the five second rule?

Many people think that if they drop a piece of food on the ground, they have five seconds to pick it up and still eat it without it being contaminated.

WSBT put that rule to the test and found that, in most cases, bacteria is transferred to a piece of food in 5 seconds.

We tested both wet and dry food on three different floors. The wetter the food, the more bacteria was picked up.

Also, carpet tended to transfer more bacteria than hard floor.

The good news - the levels of bacteria in our testing were not high enough to cause illness, but doctors say there's always a risk involved.
