For the past 4 years, ISTEP scores for South Bend Schools have gone up.
But an achievement gap between white and black students and white and Hispanic students persists.
Our news partners at the South Bend Tribune report some 80 percent of white students in grades 3 through 8 currently pass both parts of the ISTEP compared with some 60 percent of Hispanic students and 55 percent of black students.
The school board is trying to figure out how to close this gap.
Board member Roger Parent suggests the board and administration come together to hear from experts to learn about racial achievement gaps and how to eliminate them.
Statewide 73.5 percent of all students passed both parts of the test this spring.
That is up from last year.
