HOUSTON—It was an emotional night for Texas Southern University head football coach Johnnie Cole and his players following their 20-13 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday, Nov. 20 at Delmar Stadium. TSU clinched the program's first Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Western Division title and now advances to the SWAC championship game in Birmingham, Ala., on Dec. 11.
The Texas Southern Tigers, who recorded their seventh straight victory, will now compete for their first SWAC title in over 40 years.
It was certainly one of the biggest plays of the night. Soon after, the Tigers could finally celebrate.
"We had the right team on the field at the end and that was our defense," said Johnnie Cole about his Tigers' performance.
"It means a lot. We haven't won a championship I think in 42 years," said TSU quarterback Arvell Nelson, who threw for 166 yards. "And this team has been waiting for somebody to bring it home, and we going to bring it home for us."
The win isn't just huge for TSU's players but also for Cole, who quarterbacked the Tigers during the 1980s.
"I've been a part of this for 28 years, and I knew that we always had great players," said Cole. "I told our team that Texas Southern's never had a great team. This is a great team."
Now that Cole's team has captured its first SWAC Western Division title, the next challenge will be Alabama State in Birmingham on Dec. 11.
