St. Joseph County's Metro Homicide Unit has made an arrest in a Friday afternoon stabbing in South Bend.

Around 1:45 p.m., an off-duty South Bend police officer working security for LaSalle Park Homes in the 3600 block of West Jefferson Blvd. found a man badly stabbed lying on the ground.

The officer called for city medics while he tried to slow the victim's bleeding.

The man had a bad stab wound to the chest and was listed in critical condition at South Bend Memorial Hospital where he was taken in for surgery.

Metro Homicide says the man, who has not been identified, had apparently been stabbed more than once.

Investigators were quickly able to find a suspect, who was interviewed and arrested. His name and charges are being withheld until formal charges are prepared by the St. Joseph County prosecutor's office.

Frida Espinoza was on her porch watching as police were investigating.

She says, "I'm scared because I live here and I have a son, you know, and I'm scared for him."

She's lived in the neighborhood for about a year and says things are getting more and more violent.

She says, "It always happens here. It's bad around this area. It is bad."

e in the area are being cooperative ... but others are not ...

Alvin Alsanders Senior lives down the street from where the stabbing happened.

He says, "It's a tragic situation and it's a shame that stuff like this happens in our neighborhood."

He was outside for much of the day doing yard work but he did see people congregating at the Lasalle Park Homes.

He agrees that violence is on the rise in his neighborhood.

He says, "Out here you've got to watch your back. I keep me a knife in my pocket just in case."

Espinoza says, "I think I'm moving from here. I don't want to live here no more."
