A 9-year-old boy is a bit banged up after his bicycle was hit by a Mishawaka police car.

It happened just after 4:30 p.m. Friday in an alley between 3rd and 4th Streets.

Mishawaka Police Capt. Tim Spencer tells WSBT an officer was headed east in the alley when he stopped to check for traffic, but the view on the sidewalk was blocked by a bush.

Spencer says the officer inched out of the intersection when a 9-year-old boy riding his bike on the sidewalk pulled in front of the squad car.

Spencer estimates the impact of the collision at just 3-4 miles per hour.

The boy was knocked off his bike and said his knee hurt. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation, but Spencer said he did not have life-threatening injuries.

Spencer says the officer was patrolling the alleys at the time of the accident.
