PLYMOUTH -

Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth is getting a major expansion.

The hospital broke ground Friday on its new emergency department.

The 12,000 square foot facility is expected to increase capacity up to 60% and will provide a state of the art location for urgent care in Marshall County.

"This will really transform care in our community," said St. Joseph Plymouth President Loretta Schmidt. "This is not just an investment in an emergency department. This is an investment into the care that is delivered here in this community."

The new facility has a price tag of $9 million and is scheduled to be finished by September 2015.

The hospital says the current emergency department will remain open during construction.
