A big new shopping center could soon be coming to Mishawaka.
It would take shape at the northwest corner of Gumwood and Cleveland, right across from another busy shopping destination.
Most people pass by the property and hardly notice the woods and empty lots there now, but a developer, Great Lakes Capital Development, sees a lot of potential.
They propose spending more than $50 million to transform roughly 46 acres into more than two dozen structures for storefronts, restaurants, homes, offices, and other businesses.
It would be similar to Heritage Square or Toscana Park, which are right across the street.
“Because Mishawaka (is) limited in terms of where we can grow, it’s a great win for the city, the fact that this is coming in and will be developed in the manner that’s being proposed,” said Ken Prince, Mishawaka city planner.
The project still has to clear some regulatory hurdles before they can break ground, but the city of Mishawaka expects the developer to start construction in the spring.
