PHOTOS: Dog rescued after falling through St. Joseph River ice
It was an exciting and dangerous day for a dog that fell through the ice in the St. Joseph River. Luckily a passerby and the South Bend Fire Department were there to help.
This happened around 11 a.m. Monday. Natalie Tavernier told WSBT she was walking by when she saw the dog. It would alternate between clinging to the lip of the ice and swimming around looking for a way to get out. She called 911.
South Bend Fire Captain Chris Baker told us they used their ladder to rescue the dog – pushing the ladder out horizontally over the ice to climb out and pluck it from the water.
After getting warmed up in their fire truck, the dog was taken from the scene by South Bend Animal Care and Control in seemingly good health. Officials do not know who owns it.
