SOUTH BEND -

Classes start Wednesday in the South Bend School Corporation but not for students at Clay High School.

Clay is affected by the big power outage from the brief storms that swept through the area late Tuesday afternoon.

South Bend Schools spokeswoman Sue Coney tells WSBT I&M doesn't expect the power at Clay to be back on until as late as noon on Thursday, so school officials decided to close Clay on Wednesday for the safety of students.

A utility pole was apparently knocked down in the area.

Clay High School is the only South Bend school affected.

Students at nearby Clay Middle School will have to report to class in the morning.

Faculty and staff at the high school are required to report to work despite the power outage.
