ST. JOSEPH -

It's something you and your family probably look forward to every year, the Blossomtime Festival Grand Floral Parade. The event is famous for its extravagant floats, but what some people don't realize is all the hard work that goes into making them.

Communities across southwest Michigan are gearing up for the parade, which is set for this Saturday and some are working into the night to the put the final touches on their floats.

It's been four months in the making... the St. Joseph court and their families and friends have spent countless hours building a float with a Winnie the Pooh float.

"This is probably the best float St. Joseph has ever built before," said Dan Carrick, who was crowned Mr. St. Joseph 2014.

The float will grace the streets of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor during the Grand Floral Parade.

"I'm so excited, it's supposed to be a little chilly on Saturday, but hopefully we'll get over that," said Melaina Von Behran, who's Miss St. Joseph 2014. She'll be riding on top.

"I'm honored to represent it," Von Behran said. "I'm doing the best of my ability and it's been an awesome year so far."

"We're very excited about the parade," said David Zars, the float chairman for the city of Bridgman.

It's getting down to the wire for Zars and other volunteers who are working on three floats. The theme: Superman.

There's a train, a float for the "Daily Planet" and one featuring the Clark Kent phone booth. They've been working on these floats since January and can't wait to show them off.

"It's really not about winning or losing as far as the float goes, it's just about the kids and making sure they have something fun and proud of to ride on and also it's about the community as we're going down through the parade as far as letting them have a chance to have some fun and see a float and experience a good parade, that's the best part of it," Zars said.

The parade is Saturday at 1 p.m. WSBT will broadcast it live.

Aside from floats, the parade will also have clowns, antique cars, bands and much more. There will be more than 120 units all together.
