SOUTH BEND -

With the temperatures turning bitterly cold, the timing was perfect for Ziker Cleaners' "Coats for Kids" giveaway Saturday morning.

Hundreds of children in South Bend got to pick out new or gently used coats and jackets that had been donated.

The giveaway took place at Navarre Middle School, off of Lombardy Street.

Ziker Cleaners started this annual coat drive in 1986.

More than 1500 items were donated this year, including hats and gloves.

"You have these young kids who have to get on the bus, play outside at recess.  And they need to be warm.  We can't send them outside without a coat," said Jennifer Probst, Ziker Cleaners Retail Store Director.

Ziker Cleaners locations will continue to accept donations until the end of next week.

The remaining coats will be sent to Mishawaka, Elkhart and Goshen Schools to give to needy students in those areas.
