RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry says authorities have beheaded a Saudi man convicted of kidnapping and raping a 5-year-old boy.

A ministry statement says Saud bin Awad was beheaded Thursday in the capital Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam under which people convicted of murder, drug trafficking, rape and armed robbery can be executed — usually with a sword.

According to an Associated Press count, the latest execution brought the number of beheadings in the kingdom so far this year to 44. Last year, a total of 102 people were beheaded.
