MERCED, Calif. (AP) — A 37-year-old Merced man arrested for imprisoning and torturing his girlfriend has pleaded not guilty.

Daniel Ruben Gonzalez entered his plea Friday from his jail cell in a video conference with the Merced County Superior Court.

Merced police arrested Gonzalez on Tuesday after a woman reported her ex-boyfriend had abused her for hours inside his apartment. She told them the man's current girlfriend remained at the apartment in danger.

Authorities say they found Gonzalez's girlfriend badly beaten. Investigators say the woman had been trapped inside the apartment since August and subjected to a number of beatings, rapes, burnings and stabbings.
