SOUTH BEND — A number of the Notre Dame graduates have different insignia attached to their mortar boards, the traditional flat graduation caps.

Architecture students are sporting detailed building models, as is their tradition. Included are Washington, D.C., landmarks, as well as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Chrysler Building, a barn, a tall ship, a pyramid, a house of cards, Notre Dame (the Paris cathedral, not the university) and some skyscrapers that are hard to distinguish from the press box.

For other students, the symbols are more political. Some students have a yellow cross and two small feet drawn on their caps. Others are displaying the Obama "O" logo used during the campaign.

The atmosphere in here is so far typical of any college commencement. The crowd is twinkling with camera flashes and waving hands as parents try to grab their child's attention. Graduates are turned every which way, looking up into the stands for a familiar face as the band plays "Pomp and Circumstance."
