INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis police say a 5-year-old boy playing with his father's semiautomatic handgun accidentally shot and killed his younger sister.

Four-year-old Makayla Booher was shot in the head Sunday morning and pronounced dead at the scene. Police say her brother had taken her father's pistol from the top shelf of a bookcase to play and pointed it at his sister and pulled the trigger.

Police say there was no magazine in the gun, but there was a round in the chamber.

The father, 24-year-old James Booher, was home at the time, along with a 15-year-old stepsister of the children. Police plan to talk to prosecutors about whether neglect charges should be filed against the father.
