COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The State Highway Patrol says a suburban Detroit man taking part in the annual Tour of the Scioto (seye-OH'-tuh) Valley was killed when he was struck from behind by a motorist and thrown from his bicycle.

Fifty-seven-year-old William Crowley of Northville, Mich., was riding his bicycle north in the right lane of U.S. 23 when he was hit about 7:50 a.m. Sunday near Piketon. Troopers say he died at the scene.

The patrol says the driver of the car, 35-year-old Sara Bender of Lucasville, was not injured.

Cyclists in the two-day tour, held each year on Mother's Day weekend, pedal the 105 miles from Columbus to Portsmouth the first day, and return to Columbus on the second day. Piketon is about 60 miles south of Columbus.
