BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) — A teenager will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole for fatally beating and stabbing an 83-year-old woman from Bay City.

Seventeen-year-old Shawn Commire was sentenced Monday in the death of Rita Salogar.

Commire's 19-year-old cousin, Robert Commire, received the same sentence a few weeks ago.

A Bay County jury found Shawn Commire guilty last month, while his cousin pleaded no contest.

Salogar died in her home after being stabbed in what police called a botched robbery. Authorities say Salogar died after receiving 42 stab wounds and at least seven blows to the head.

The defense attorney argued the killing wasn't premeditated and asked the judge to give Commire the possibility of parole after serving 20 years.
