ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) — A high school teacher was reprimanded for writing a note calling for a student to be banished from the human race for lack of work.

The May 9 discipline referral chided sophomore Ranisha Dillard for not doing enough work and talking in Paul Tappan's earth science class at Anderson High School.

"NO NEED for her to come back to my class. Please banish from the human race and exile accordingly," read the handwritten disciplinary referral.

Anderson Community Schools Superintendent Mikella Lowe said the note was inappropriate and principals had taken steps to make sure it would not occur again. She said Tappan's job was secure but declined further comment.

There was no number for Tappan in published phone listings and he could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.

The student's mother, Tanja Dillard, said the teacher had told her the note was meant to be sarcastic and he had had a bad day.

"Why do we have a teacher in the school system that has that much anger?" she asked.

Ranisha Dillard, 17, said she was failing several classes and hoped to do better next year.

"This has not been a very good year for me," she said. "By next year, hopefully my grades will go up."
