Memorial service remembers fallen Indiana troops

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana military personnel who have died in the service of their country were remembered Friday at a memorial ceremony at Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis.

The wreath-laying ceremony included a reading of the names of Indiana servicemen who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan during the past year and a flyover by four Indiana Air National Guard fighter jets.

"No state so honors its veterans as Indiana," Gov. Mitch Daniels said. "We are a state of patriots and by your presence here you have marked us again as a state that never, ever forgets."

He told the crowd of several hundred people about his recent visit with Indiana troops deployed in Iraq, saying he saw brothers serving together and fathers serving near sons and daughters.

"The young people and not so young who are serving us this day in Iraq, Afghanistan and other points around the world are holding up the tradition of those we came her to celebrate and commemorate in a way that should make you very proud," he said.

The memorial service is part of the city's 500 festival, which continues Saturday with a parade through downtown.
