PENDLETON, Ind. (AP) — School officials could suspend student athletes who were caught smoking from competition under a policy being considered by the South Madison school district board.

A student would be suspended from 20 percent of the athletic season after one offense. Three offenses would result in suspension from sports for the duration of the student's enrollment in the district.

The board reviewed the proposal Thursday night but did not vote pending a review by the district's legal counsel.

The new rules would forbid using, selling or distributing tobacco products. The penalties are less than those for other drugs, but some board members said they would like the penalties to be the same.

Students who entered a counseling program could have their suspensions reduced.

Superintendent Thomas Warmke said he believed few school districts have such a smoking policy, and it had the support of coaches.

"This did not come from the superintendent," he said. "The coaches were the ones who were driving this."
