DETROIT (AP) — The state's largest school district could face a temporary shutdown if its budget issues aren't resolved.

And the Detroit Free Press reports there are worries an estimated $400 million Detroit Public Schools shortfall could prompt another state takeover.

The Free Press and The Detroit News report the school board plans to meet Monday. The board may need to approve a budget it rejected Friday if it wants to keep the district running.

Early Saturday, the state Senate passed a resolution calling for an investigation of the district's finances.

Detroit schools spokesman Steve Wasko says the district would welcome help from the state in uncovering longtime financial problems. But he says a state takeover like the one from 1999 to 2005 would be disastrous.
