GARY, Ind. (AP) — Gary Mayor Rudy Clay says he will immediately begin buying the gasoline for his city-leased Hummer H3 and has told other city workers with take-home cars to do the same.

Clay said Friday that the city is spending $30,000 a week on gas and that he was trying to lead by example in dealing with the city's financial troubles.

The new rule on fueling up vehicles will apply to all city employees, except for police officers and firefighters, as of Tuesday.

Clay says he intends to keep the Hummer, which gets between 13 and 19 mpg. He says he sees no problem now that he is paying for the gasoline and because it gets better mileage than many SUVs.

Clay says the city's budget troubles are being worsened by an expected $36 million shortfall in revenue next year because of property tax changes approved by the Legislature.

WHY? does the mayor need a dang Hummer anyway? Does that even make any sense? Why can't he use his own personal car, he's not a sales rep meeting with the doctors and all! The more I read about political issues, makes me want to just get sick. I cannot believe how much $ city/county/state offices waste on items that are sooo uncalled for...such as this Hummer. And not paying taxes sounds so good & this is part of the reason. We pay taxes for those so needed "items". ugh!

I'm from the city of Gary and that place is falling apart all over. The mayor should have been buying his own gas a long time ago! The city is always crying broke but they spend 30,000 a week on gas! The kids don't even have up to date text books! That city is in bad shape and the mayor is not a good leader. Before he's out of office we'll hear about how much money he's stolen. That's a promise!

I'll bet these people will have a sudden new interest in how much gas they waste. Thank God a politician is finally taking some responsbility instead of our money.
