CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Fireworks could be seen shooting out the window of a store in Crawfordsville where crews battled a fire in a strip mall that also contained a pet supply store.

Crawfordsville Fire Department Chief Eric Small says none of the animals inside the store could be rescued. Officials are unsure how many animals were in the store that housed exotic pets such as birds, lizards and ferrets.

No people were injured. The mall also includes a tax preparation office.

The fire was reported in the pet store shortly after 3:30 a.m. Wednesday and took several hours to bring under control. Small says the fireworks made the fire more intense.

The strip mall is in downtown Crawfordsville, about 45 miles northwest of Indianapolis.
