Boy severely burned setting fire to deer carcass

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Police say an 11-year-old boy was severely burned when he and his older brother set fire to a deer carcass.

Tippecanoe County Sheriff's deputies say the boy is being treated at an Indianapolis hospital for burns on his chest. Officials did not release his name or his condition.

Detective Greg Haltom says the boy and his brother found a small deer carcass in a rural area near Lafayette Tuesday and attempted to burn it in a barrel. Gasoline or some other flammable substance got on the boy's T-shirt and it caught fire.

Haltom said the boy's brother was not injured.

He says the injuries appear to be unintentional.

Course I'm serious. Boys get to burning things, they go after wood, grass, barns etc. Nope, I reckon they were fixing to have themselves a little old Indiana backwoods cookout. Now, while they shoulda gone for a steel grill over a firepit, the barrel cookin technique is viable, but ONLY with charcoal, never gasoline. And it's more for makin jerky than a evening meal which may have been their plan. Prayers are with em, bless em.

Bubbles - Are you serious? Do you honestly think they were trying to cook it to eat it? They're boys - they were just doing something stupid without any intent of eating the thing!

Dear Anon 1:32 I didn't say you set animals on fire. I said kids will be kids and kids do stupid things. What are you not understanding? Just because you were perfect doesn't mean the whole world is. Get real!

OMG, you people MUST learn how to read for content. There was no grilling involved. The deer carcass was FOUND by these boys - NOT a planned meal. And boys being boys, a tragic accident happened.

In my opinion, he got what he deserved. How sad to do such a cruel, disrespectful thing. Dead animals now, what next? Parents WAKE-UP!

I sure hope these young uns are ok. Seems a strange way to grill something, makes me wonder what their daddy is playin it. By that age they should know the basics of both charcoal and propane based grilling and to never EVER use gas. Not only can it flash up but it ruins the flavor of the meat, same with heating oil. Deer can be a tricky meat too, often stringy and hard to find a good rub for. But, kudos and 10/10 for effort, 6/10 for the results kids.
