Ex-teacher gets probation in sex case

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) — A former Roseville High School French teacher accused of having sex with a teenage teacher's assistant has been sentenced to three years probation in the case.

Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Mark Switalski says at Wednesday's sentencing that 42-year-old Janelle Batkins of Harrison Township was an "ideal candidate" for probation. She has no previous criminal record.

She must also complete 240 hours of community service.

Batkins pleaded no contest in May in a deal with prosecutors to two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt, but is treated as such for sentencing.

Authorities say Batkins and the then-17-year-old male student had consensual sex during the 2006-07 school year.
