CLARKSTON, Mich. (AP) — An Oxford High School teacher and her husband face charges in the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl.
Authorities say 53-year-old Margaret Keely befriended the Oxford Township girl when she was a freshman in 2006, and invited her to do jobs around the couple's home in Oakland County's Brandon Township.
The girl told police that Margaret Keely's 64-year-old husband William, a convicted sex offender, invited her over to watch a movie June 26 and sexually assaulted her. She said she fled the house, drove home and reported the incident to the Oakland County Sheriff's Department the next day.
William Keely was arraigned Thursday on charges including fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, child abuse and weapons possession by a felon. His wife was charged with failure to report abuse.
Keely was jailed on $6.5 million bond while his wife was released on bond. Their next court date is July 15.
A message seeking comment was left Thursday with the Keelys' lawyer, Richard Rosenberg.
Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in the months leading up to the assault, William Keely engaged in "classic molester" behavior by showing the girl pornographic material and asking her to test out sex toys.
"Break down the inhibitions and the fears, then try and escalate it from there," Bouchard said.
Bouchard said the circumstances were similar to those surrounding William Keely's sexual assault of his 14-year-old foster daughter. He was convicted of the assault in 2001 and completed probation in 2004.
The sheriff said he wished Keely's wife would face a harsher charge.
"You have a spouse that is actually a school employee that invited this young girl into the home of a convicted sex offender," Bouchard said.

Put the parents of the girl in jail. They were informed that this Keely guy already had a record and knowingly allowed their daughter to hang out with an old guy. They knew this months before this was reported to the police. A little bird told me that if they look into the parents they will uncover more - ask more quests. Come on Oakland County Police! - The girls parents are going to try and sue the school to get money when they knowingly let their daughter interact with the Keelys for years.
