3 killed in rainstorm crash on I-65 near FrankfortFRANKFORT, Ind. (AP) — A car barreled across the Interstate 65 median during a rainstorm into the path of an oncoming semitrailer, causing a crash that killed all three people inside the car. The semi hit the small car in the northbound lanes of I-65 shortly before 10 a.m. Monday, with the impact tearing the car into two pieces, state police Sgt. Kim Riley said. A stretch of I-65's northbound lanes was closed for more than three hours as wreckage was removed from the scene about 15 miles southeast of Lafayette. The truck jackknifed in the crash and the cab came to a stop a ditch, leaving only the trailer's rear wheels on the highway shoulder. Riley said the car was registered in Minnesota, but authorities were not immediately sure who the victims were or where they lived. The truck driver suffered no significant injuries but was taken to a hospital as a precaution. The semi was on a pickup and delivery run from Indianapolis to Lafayette and was carrying miscellaneous goods, but no hazardous materials, said Randy Miners, director of regional operations for Roadway. |
