Canoeists find 3-foot alligator in White River

ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) — A couple canoeing down the White River over the weekend found something unexpected lurking in the waters — a 3-foot-long alligator.

The owner of an Anderson pet store is now caring for the reptile, which is between 18 and 24 months old. Night Stalkers Pet Emporium owner Ed Roemer says the alligator was likely released by its owner into the river, where it survived on fish.

He says North American alligators are common in Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana but could not survive an Indiana winter.

After the couple found the alligator Saturday near Anderson, a state conservation officer captured the animal. The state Department of Natural Resources will determine what becomes of it.
