Governor wants legal protections for teachers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels says teachers should have legal protections if they act in good faith to maintain discipline and order in their classrooms.

Daniels said Monday that if he is re-elected, he would ask the General Assembly next year to give legal immunity for teachers who may become the target of litigation.

For example, one Indiana student sued a principal for attempting to restrain the student after he was separated during a fight. Another student filed a tort claim after a gym teacher required the student to do push-ups as a punishment.

Daniels said in announcing the proposal in Fort Wayne that teachers should feel comfortable preventing disruptive students from disturbing others who want to learn.
