Ohio school says cheerleader skirts too short

MONROE, Ohio (AP) — High school cheerleaders have been caught short by a new dress code.

The Monroe school district this year is requiring all skirts worn in class to be no shorter than 3 inches above the knees. That rules out the cheerleaders' slit-sided miniskirts, which traditionally have been worn to school on game days.

Cheerleaders will violate the policy unless the girls wear leggings or long shorts under the skirts.

That's left some Fighting Hornet cheerleaders and parents buzzing.

"This came out of left field last week when they told the girls and us parents about the change. Our jaws just hit the ground," said Tammy Ihle, whose daughter cheers for the freshmen football team. "We've spent more than $400 on the uniform and she worked hard and earned the right to wear her uniform at school."

Ihle wonders why the uniforms are OK for the girls to wear in pep rallies and at games, but not for school. Some parents said it's silly to link cheerleaders to school efforts to curtail provocative clothing.

"The cheerleading uniform skirts have always been short," Ihle said.

Superintendent Elizabeth Lolli said officials plan to meet with unhappy parents but have no plans to change the policy for the 1,000-student district, about 25 miles north of Cincinnati.

Krista Petersen, whose daughter is also a freshman cheerleader, said she and other parents will complain to the Monroe school board.

The nearby Lakota school district makes an exception in its dress code for cheerleaders.

I wish the grandmothers of some of these girls would tell everyone that these skirts are LONG compared to what they used to get away with wearing back in the '60s!

I have to assume that this ruling and some comments here are from the baby boom generation. Do you not remember what you wore in high school? Midrif, low low low cut jeans, itsy bitsy teenie weenie tiny bikinis, tiny speedo swim suits for the guys, and skirts nearly as short as the cheerleadering outfits. When did this "love, peace and rock-n-roll" generation get so uptight? We were thinner than most of the teens today so we looked 'hot' dressed like that. ROCK ON!

all the comments about skirts can never be too short are from people who blame women for being raped because of what they wear.

I fully agree with the normal guy. There is nothing wrong or perverse about a short skirt. They wouldn't wear them if they don't wish to be seen.

Cheerleader skirts can NEVER be to short!! Volleyball is just as bad with their "bun huggers" i wish i was back in high school again......

...aaaaand, this is a problem, why? To 2:00 AM Anonymous: So WHAT IS WRONG with guys wanting to look at pretty girls? YOU are so screwed up in your thinking. Guys LIKE looking at pretty girls, and there is absolutely NOTHING perverse about it. It's NATURAL and just plain and simple THE WAY GOD AND NATURE INTENDED IT TO BE. ...so lay off. Go tighten your hair bun or something.

I noticed it's mainly guys who are all for the skimpy cheerleading uniforms on here. Why don't you guys go buy yourself a Playboy magazine to get your cheap thrills, and quit gawking at underage girls in tiny little outfits. Their fathers catch you looking too hard and they may punch your eyeballs back into your heads.

Her mother said she "EARNED the right to wear her (skimpy) uniform at school"? What did she do to...? OH! Well, maybe she did. We'll have to ask the ball player if that's true.

7:48 Mike needs to back off with the "bible hugging prudes." That is completely ridiculous. I thinks this short skirt topic is ridiculous, let them go and be cheerleaders.

My god....all of you bible hugging prudes get a life. So they show some skin...GET OVER IT!!!! Its rediculous to have to conform to you people. Heres an idea, if you dont want to see it...dont look. Not a hard concept to grasp!! They feel comfortable and arent hurting anyone. But they have to change just because the prudes find it "offensive" psh...

To the parent who said the cheerleader skirts have always been short is wrong,..over the years they get shorter and shorter. Lets start demanding our daughters look like women and not hookers!

I could really care less about the skirts, but it's only fair to treat all students the same. Either let them all wear short skirts, or make them all wear longer. And as a former cheerleader, cheerleaders DO know that the outfits are provocative. That's half the fun for them, otherwise they wouldn't find it such a big deal.

Aren't there enough sex crimes already by perverts without girls exposing more skin to aggravate the situation? Lower the skirts or make them wear shorts under them during school hours. I think the cheerleader uniforms are getting too skimpy anyway.

a girl can be fully clothed with nice fitting clothes and no skin showing and just simply bend over and have some guy check out her rear and say something about it. boys will be boys and when you get an athletic female figure in front of them they will just say the same stuff as they always do.

I'm impressed with the Superintendent saying she will enforce the rules! Good for her! It's usually the other way around, and the cheerleaders get to do whatever they want.

the cheerleaders may find the skirts cute and innocent and part of a uniform, but thats not what all the boys think walkin behind them in the hall.if they were long enough that everything they have to offer didnt show when they bend over it would be great

Why not just let them wear what the female beach vollyball players wear. I see no problem with that either. Short skirts are a goooood thing.

I find this hilarious! The cheerleaders from my former high school used the short skirts to their advantage. They need to realize that they are there to SUPPORT the team-not get people to check out their legs (and more!)
