Police shoot dogs that attacked children

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) — A police officer used a shotgun to kill two pit bulls that attacked children in a park in Kokomo.

Authorities and witnesses say the dogs, one brindle and one black, attacked at least two children — a girl on a bicycle and an 11-year-old boy — Tuesday in Highland Park.

Neither child was seriously injured.

The dogs also attacked a Chihuahua.

The Kokomo Tribune reports that the dogs also tried to attack police Officer Ty Solomon before he shot them with a 12-gauge shotgun.

John Beechy, whose daughter was attacked, says the dogs were not on leashes and no one knew who owned them.

Attacked a Chihuahua but didn't kill it? 2 pit bulls attacked kids, but neither was seriously injured? Tried to attack the police officer? The Humane Society should have been called, but that wasn't necessay because the cop already had a shotgun there at the scene and felt his life was in imminent danger when they did not respond to the cocking of the 12 guage shotgun he was going to use regardless of how fast they wagged their tails. Besides, they were pit bulls and deserve it.

I still stand by my comment that children are more important than ANY dog, and if certain dogs pose a threat to children, then they should NOT be allowed in city limits. There are too many irresponsible owners. I'm sorry if that ruins it for the responsible owners, but something must be done to protect the children. You can't change people's attitudes very easily, but you can change the laws about dogs. Don't get me wrong, I love dogs, but I love children more.

The reason its so easy to teach a pit bull to fight is bec/ its breed into them to obey any and all commands given by there master. They are the most loyal dogs.and to the 8:41pm comment-your right the truth is the truth, and not all of these dogs are bad!!you think pitbulls are dangerous?Look at whos running our country!!!Im not tring to be mean, im just sick of everyone saying pits are bad dogs.most ppl have never even met one!!ban the deed not the breed!!!!

I have read throug all the comments and I am appauld at some of them, I personally own a Rottweiler that the breed is also tagged with this ugly misconception that they are terrible animals, all these PEOPLE that are TRAINING the dogs are the problem, not the dog breed, try doing a little Research on the American Staffordshire Terrier also known by the street name Pit Bull before typing some of these insane comments, Thank you to all that support the animals, I know its a tough battle we can win

As I have already said, your pit bull may be "nice", but not everyone's is. It's nice that this breed can be used for therapy and was used for good during WWI & WWII, but in today's world there are too many sick people teaching these dogs to be killing machines. It seems like too many people favor this dog to teach bad behavior to. Is there a reason for this? Could it be pit bulls are easier than most dogs to teach to attack? Most of the time the victims seem to be children. That is sad.

6. The Pit Bull was so popular in the early 1900's they were our mascot not only in World War One, but World War Two as well. They were featured on recruiting and propoganda posters during this time period.9. Pit Bulls score an 83.4% passing rate with the American Temperament Test Society. That's better than the popular Border Collie (a breed who scores 79.6%). View the ATTS stats here. 10. They are dogs not killing machines.

5. Pit Bulls are not human aggressive. The American Pit Bull Terrier as a breed is not human aggressive. In fact, quite the opposite is true of the breed. They are gentle and loving dogs. Like any dog individuals can be unsound and have behavior problems.6. The Pit Bull was so popular in the early 1900's they were our mascot not only in World War One, but World War Two as well. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY- 1. Pit Bulls are commonly used as therapy dogs. Whether they are visiting a senior care facility or helping someone recover from an emotional accident, Pit Bulls are making a mark as outstanding therapy dogs. 2. Pit Bulls are used in Search and Rescue work. One example of well known SAR Pit Bulls is Kris Crawford and her dogs. Kris and her dogs have helped save the lives of many people during their efforts. http://www.ForPitsSake.org

Regardless of what type of dogs they are, if they attack anyone at any age, they should be put down. Period. There are good & bad of every type of breed, including humans.

Before all the Pit-Bull lovers start yelling - Notice that these type of dogs are mainly the ones that are in the news for attacking people. Yours might be "nice", but MANY of these dogs are not. This dog attack case and so many like it is the reason so many people want these dogs outlawed in cities and towns. You can't blame the parents or children either for feeling that way. And NO it isn't the child's fault. No dog's life is worth more than the life of any child.

These dogs scare me to death. There are 3 in our neighborhood, and they act vicious on their chains when we just walk by. They're supposed to be reported to homeowners insurance, but I doubt anyone does. they are just a complete hazard to society. I think it's like the Napolean Syndrome, if you have a tough, mean dog, it makes you think you're mean & tough, too. they are bread killers. and the owners should be held more accountable.

Finally someone does the right thing and shoots the dangerous animals! These dogs attacked over and over and needed to be put down then and there. dont spend the tax payers money houseing them somewhere for weeks! this should happen more often!
