BROWNSTOWN, Ind. (AP) — The former township fire chief in southern Indiana is pleading guilty to charges he stole more than $38,000 from the department.

Under the plea agreement entered in Jackson County Court, former Carr Township fire chief Russell Todd Snodgrass will serve no more than six months in prison and repay nearly $29,000 to the department. The rest of the loss was paid by the department's insurance company.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 9, allowing time for authorities to check his progress in repaying the money.

Prosecutors say Snodgrass took the money from 2003 to 2005, while he was chief of the rural department between Seymour and Bedford.

An audit found that Snodgrass used about $750 of the money on car repairs and to buy fishing lures and a Guns N' Roses album.
