ST. CHARLES, Ill. (AP) — A Carpentersville man has been sentenced to natural life in prison for the fatal beating of his girlfriend's 2-year-old son.

Kane County Circuit Judge Timothy Sheldon handed down the sentence Thursday for 28-year-old Andres Velazquez. Sheldon said the life sentence was mandatory under Illinois law because the victim was younger than 12.

Sheldon convicted Velazquez of one count of first-degree murder in May.

Prosecutors said Velazquez threw 2-year-old Ernest LeFlore Junior 12 feet through the air and onto a floor radiator on December 30th, 2005, causing a skull fracture, brain contusions and a broken collar bone. The child died on January 6th, 2006. The cause of death was blunt force trauma.

Velazquez told authorities the injuries came from rough play.

Let someone beat him to death. With every blow to his body, he should be reminded of what he did to that child. I have no sympathy at all for child abusers/killers.
