For a Hammond truck driver, it was one pizza delivery that really went to the wrong address — all 26,652 pounds' worth.

Indiana State Police say the 38-year-old contractor was supposed to take a semi-truck load of Stouffer frozen pizzas from Nation Pizza in Schaumburg, Ill., and deliver them in Utah last week.

But when he realized he wasn't going to make delivery on time because his truck was out of commission, the driver tried to pass off the 3,600 cases of pizza as his own and called his insurance company, explaining that he needed to sell them.

Transportation Salvage in Rockford, Ill., smelled something wrong with the deal, and it wasn't the pepperoni.

Police say the firm checked out the story, and found the pizzas actually belonged to Stouffer parent company Nestle, not the driver.

Nestle had filed a stolen-goods report with Schaumburg authorities, claiming the pizzas were hot. Really hot.

ISP was called, and arrangements were made through Transportation Salvage to set up a meeting with the driver. That's when a detective in Gary, where the truck had been in for repairs, arrested him after he attempted to flee their meeting.

The semi-trailer, with $45,000 in pizzas inside, was located and the driver taken to Lake County Jail.

Authorities say the man faces charges relating to the case, as well as an outstanding larceny warrant from 1998.
