FERNDALE, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a first-grade boy brought a loaded gun to school in Ferndale and showed it to a classmate before it was taken away by a teacher.

WXYZ-TV and the Detroit Free Press report the classmate told the teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School about the gun shortly after being shown it Thursday, and the weapon was confiscated.

Ferndale Public Schools spokeswoman Stephanie Hall says the student who brought the gun wasn't in school Friday. Parents of students in the suburban Detroit school were told about the weapon in a letter.

Ferndale police Capt. Timothy Collins says the gun was loaded, but there wasn't a bullet in the chamber.
