KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) — State officials will break ground this week on a bypass that will carry U.S. 31 around Kokomo, one of the most congested areas on the highway between Indianapolis and South Bend.

Gov. Mitch Daniels and other state officials will take part in the ceremony to begin construction on the $345 million project. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday on the south side of Kokomo.

The first construction will be a bridge that will carry Southway Boulevard over the new route.

Construction of the bypass is expected to be completed in 2016.

The new bypass around Kokomo is part of $1.1 billion in planned upgrades along the 120-mile route of U.S. 31 between Indianapolis and South Bend. New construction also is scheduled for Hamilton and St. Joseph counties.
