MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — A Mount Pleasant woman accused of using state aid to buy candy and have her children sell it under the guise of fundraising for charity has been sentenced to one year of probation and 200 hours of community service.

An Isabella County Circuit Court judge on Monday sentenced 29-year-old Joanne Walters after she pleaded guilty to committing fraud under false pretenses and contributing to the delinquency of minors.

Authorities say Walters used her state-issued Bridge Card — which is used like a debit card — to buy candy, then made her 11-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter sell the candy door-to-door in Gratiot and Isabella counties.
