MERRILLVILLE (AP) — Hundreds of friends and family members attended the funerals of a father and son who died while trying to rescue a child from a flooded Chesterton creek Sunday.

Mourners on Thursday remembered 74-year-old John "Papou" Thanos and his son, 48-year-old Mark Thanos, as heroes. The father and son were sucked into a culvert and drowned Sunday while trying to rescue a 10-year-old boy from a flooded ditch in a Chesterton subdivision. The boy was able to make it safely out of the water.

Mark Thanos had two teenage sons and was a language arts teacher at Wheeler High School in Valparaiso. His wife told mourners she was both overwhelmed and grateful for the support she received after the deaths of her husband and father-in-law.
