CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago police say they shot and killed two pit bulls after the dogs severely mauled a 6-year-old boy on the city's West Side, but a third dog escaped.

Police News Officer JoAnn Taylor says officers saw the three dogs attacking the boy in a vacant lot Friday evening, and had to shoot two of them to stop the attack.

The boy was reported in serious condition late Friday at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Police were questioning the dogs owner late Friday, and said he lived next door to the vacant lot where the attack occurred.
