Volunteers find room for displaced pets

LAKE STATION, Ind. (AP) — Volunteers and agencies are finding room for pets displaced by flooding in northwest Indiana.

Several displaced residents had brought their pets to a shelter at the Boys & Girls Club in Lake Station following evacuations after flooding that began Sept. 12, but officials told them last week their pets would have to stay in makeshift cages outside.

That's when Betty Clayton, director of the Humane Society of Northwest Indiana in nearby Gary, stepped in.

"Lake Station does not have a Humane Society ... so I called Lake Station yesterday and said 'What can we do to help you?'" she said.

Clayton and a Lake Station animal control officer transferred the pets — 10 dogs, four cats, birds and various small animals — to the shelter in Gary's Miller area Thursday.

Animal enthusiast Tracy Krell got a call Friday from the Hobart Humane Society asking for help for a woman who had left her two dogs in her car because she had nowhere else to put them. The local Humane Society was already full when she got there.

Krell added the two dogs to the 15 dogs, five cats, four birds and one goat in the makeshift animal shelter she's running out of her Lake Station home and a neighbor's garage. Krell has been assisting the Humane Societies in Hobart, Gary and Munster when they were overwhelmed with refugee pets.

"We've got a big garage and a million pet taxis, so we can house everyone indefinitely," Krell said. "Everyone gets walked, fed, and treats, and I'm not turning anyone away."
