INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A teacher who admitted having sex with a 15-year-old student during a special outing she arranged for the tryst was sentenced Friday to two years of home detention.

Sheila Vasquez, 36, apologized for her conduct and asked for leniency before Marion Superior Court Commissioner Stan Kroh sentenced her to two years in home detention, followed by four years on sex offender probation. The Fishers woman also will have to register as a sex offender.

Prosecutors had sought at least four years in prison for Vasquez, who was arrested in May and charged with four counts of felony sexual misconduct with a minor. She later agreed to plead guilty to one count in exchange for a maximum eight years in prison.

The mother of three had taught eighth grade at Warren Township Schools' alternative Renaissance School for students in grades 6-12. She resigned from that job after her arrest.

Police said Vasquez and the boy, with whom she had been flirting, hatched a plan to have sex during a lunch outing she told administrators was a reward for his improved classroom performance.

Prosecutors said Vasquez drove the boy to her home on May 1 and they had sex while a female student she had brought along stayed downstairs.
