EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A Madison County man is accused of using a wood-splitting maul to beat his father to death.

Thirty-three-year-old James Lane of Bethalto is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery.

Investigators say 63-year-old James Lane was killed in his home Sunday night after being hit on the head with the maul.

The suspect's mother also was hit by the maul during the alleged attack. She was treated at a hospital and released.

Authorities say the younger Lane called 911 and reported he'd killed his father.

He's jailed without bond. It's not immediately clear if he has an attorney.

A wood-splitting maul is a heavy wedge attached to a long handle.

Do you really think that if he were on drugs he would have called 911 and said he just killed his father? He would of called and said "I just found my old man dead". He obviously had a clear head and knew exactly what he was doing. Let him fry in the electric chair. I want to flip the switch.

Some people don't need drugs to be this messed up. While it is certainly a possibility we don't have that much evidence to say that's 100% true.

That is the point Me Myself And I was trying to make, Anon. That someone would have to be on some kind of drug to do something this horrific...you seem to have anger issues going on here...chill out.
