NORTHFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — At least 14 people, including a number of children, were injured when an overloaded bus carrying members of an Amish church to a funeral was clipped by a semitrailer and rolled on its side on a highway.

None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening, and most were cuts and bruises.

Four adults and two children were in serious condition at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, spokeswoman Kara Gavin said.

The bus driver was trying to avoid a slower vehicle entering southbound U.S. 23 in Washtenaw County's Northfield Township before 1 p.m. Thursday when the bus swerved left in front of the truck, Michigan State Police Trooper Randy Phare said.

The truck hit the back of the bus, which rolled on its side and skidded along the highway 40 miles west of Detroit. Another vehicle then ran into the back of the stopped truck.

The Mount Pleasant-area church members were headed to a funeral in Ohio, Phare said.

Alcohol and speed were not factors in the crash.

Phare said 22 people were in the 13-seat bus. He was not sure if its seat belts were being worn.

"It could have been a lot worse," he said, pointing to the truck's size and speed. He estimated the truck was traveling between 60 mph and 70 mph.

Motor vehicle laws will be researched to determine if charges will be filed against the bus driver, Phare said.

Traffic was stopped along the highway as emergency medical personnel treated the injured. Eight people refused treatment at the scene, Huron Valley Ambulance spokeswoman Joyce Williams said.
