CLEVELAND (AP) — Some food pantries are reporting unprecedented numbers of request for groceries and some are experiencing bare shelves.

The Cleveland Foodbank had a record month in October when it distributed 2.6 million pounds of food, 24 percent more than last year.

The pantry distributed 120,000 pounds of food in one day last week, another record for the 30-year-old agency.

The cupboards at the Food Force of Painesville in Lake County were empty for four of their 16 distribution days in September except for some canned and dried beans.

Michelle Wohlfeiler (WOLL'-feye-ler) of the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland says more people need help and fewer donations are coming in.

The Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks says the number of households served by Ohio's food banks rose 18 percent from January 2006 to January 2008.
