WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A "suspicious container" led to the evacuation of the Purdue Armory Monday.

Lt. Mike Boesch of the campus police said the armory was closed, with between 100 and 150 people evacuated about 8:45 a.m. after the discovery of a small, military ammunition box near a bush bordering the Armory.

A groundskeeper who opened the box found black powder and reloading supplies for the muzzleloading-type gun, the university said in a press release.

The Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department bomb squad took the package, described as 6 inches wide, 12 inches long and 8 inches high, from the scene. Purdue officers continue to investigate the case.

University Street was reopened and people allowed to return about 90 minutes after the discovery.
