PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — A hospital security guard who found a homeless man prosecutors say two 14-year-old boys beat to death says the man was so badly injured that he was unrecognizable.

Shawn Fast testified Tuesday in 50th District Court that Wilford "Frenchie" Hamilton often came to the POH Regional Medical Center in Pontiac looking for bottles. But when he discovered Hamilton still breathing in a nearby alley around 6 a.m. on Aug. 21, Fast said, Hamilton's head was so swollen that "he almost didn't look human."

Thomas McCloud Jr. and Dontez Tillman are charged with felony murder in the 61-year-old man's death. The Pontiac teens appeared Tuesday for a preliminary exam.

They are charged as adults and face life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.

District Judge Preston Thomas heard from Fast and a doctor who treated Hamilton before his death on Aug. 25 before adjourning the hearing to Dec. 4. Thomas will decide if there is enough evidence to continue to trial.

McCloud also is charged with felony murder in the death of another homeless man, Lee Hoffman, 65, who prosecutors say died after a separate attack in August.

Assistant Oakland County prosecutor Gregory Townsend says Tillman and another person may be charged in that case after forensic evidence — strands of hair found on three seized pairs of shoes — is examined. The court on Tuesday ordered DNA to be collected from Tillman and McCloud for testing.

Tillman's attorney, Marsha Kosmatka, says it's too early to comment on the case. McCloud's attorney, Howard Arnkoff, left the courtroom without speaking to reporters.

Dana Busch, who was the trauma attending surgeon on-call at POH the morning of Aug. 21, testified that Hamilton suffered significant internal bleeding in his skull and subsequent brain damage.

"The prognosis for any functional recovery was zero," Busch said, and Hamilton's family decided to take him off life support.

On cross-examination from Arnkoff and Kosmatka, Busch said Hamilton's injuries were consistent with a fall or automobile accident as well as an assault.
