Michigan carnival worker dies in Puerto Rico accident

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Police say a 43-year-old carnival worker from Michigan died after being hit by a falling section of a Ferris wheel that he helped install in Puerto Rico's capital.

A police statement says Gerald Meifbett died instantly when a 200-pound segment of lights from the amusement ride hit him before the Hato Rey fairground opened.

His hometown in Michigan was not given. Nobody else was harmed.

Puerto Rico's police and coronor's office were still investigating Monday's accident.

Jose De Miranda, a spokesman for the municipal government of San Juan, says the accident was "very lamentable."

The carnival, which began Thursday, is being put on by a company called FAMA Events.
